Apart from an active ingredient, capsules contain one or more excipients. The function of the excipient is to provide the powder to be filled into capsules or sachets with sufficient flowability. A powder for sachets or capsules needs to be free-flowing in order to guarantee a consistent weight and a uniform content of the active ingredient in each single dose. The powder to be filled needs to have a homogeneous composition, which is best guaranteed when the different components of the mixture have a comparable particle size distribution. Excipients for capsules and sachets also need good flowability. Lactose products commonly used for this application are the unmilled alpha-monohydrate lactose products. |
