Line graphs are often used instead of bar charts. How do we convert a bar chart into a line graph? Drawing lines between the midpoints of the top lines of consecutive bars results in a line that can be used instead of the bar chart. The smaller the size classes chosen, the smoother the line connecting the midpoints will be. In modern techniques for PSD measurement, such as laser diffraction e.g., sophisticated software is used to calculate the PSD with virtually infinitely small size classes. The PSD is then represented by a continuous smooth line.
The figure below shows the graphical output of a PSD measurement with the Coulter LS130 (a laser diffraction technique) for a sample of the lactose product Lactochem Crystals. The ’solid’ line is the differential representation of the PSD measured, the ‘dotted’ line is the cumulative undersize representation.
